March 23, 1927 - August 12, 2021
Eleanor Ann “Hooper” Dean was born March 23, 1927 in Plainview, Texas to Electa and Kelly Hooper. She was one of five children, raised by a single mother, during the Depression Era, Dust Bowl, and World War II years. Money was hard to come by during those times, but she was always a hard worker and able to find a job to help earn money for the family. Those jobs included work as a switchboard operator and then at the local soda fountain where she met her future husband, Orville Dean. They were married on November 16, 1948, lived a good life, and enjoyed each other for 43 wonderful years until his untimely passing in March 1992. Together they had three sons who they dearly loved and cherished. Mom was always there for her family. She bandaged our cuts and scrapes, picked us up when we fell down, and her hugs and kisses could ease the pain of the hardest blow. Mom was our greatest cheerleader and always active in our lives, including our schoolwork, PTA events, theatrical endeavors, sports, and our friends. Mom wanted the best for each of us and encouraged us to do our best, no matter the cause or occasion. She helped us learn the value of a dollar and how to spend our money wisely. She kept us on the straight and narrow and guided us to be respectful and to live up to our responsibilities. If we needed help, she was there for us, whether it involved delivering newspapers when it was pouring rain or blowing snow; holding a flashlight at 10:00 o’clock on a Sunday night to help find a queen ant for a suddenly remembered science class project due on Monday; or typing a procrastinated class report that was due the next morning. Mom was a fantastic cook and she went out of her way to make every holiday and birthday special, whether it was caramel turtles, peanut brittle, and fudge for Christmas, a heart shaped cake for Valentines, or the Easter egg cake for Easter. When birthdays came, she knew what favorite cake to bake to make that day extra special. She celebrated good report cards with a special crème pie. She made pancakes on Saturday mornings and enjoyed surprising us with special treats like chocolate chip cookies, apple and cherry pies. Mom had a green thumb and her flower gardens were the envy of the neighborhood. She enjoyed painting, sewing, and making things for the home. She loved her family and all the things that boys would do. She had fun camping and even continued it clear into her sixties. As the Mother of three sons, she never admitted it, but would have loved to have had a daughter to talk to. Her dream finally came true when her sons married, and she welcomed each wife with open arms as a member of the family. The grandchildren and eventual great grandchildren that followed brought added joy to her life. Mom and Dad were active, long time members of Polk Street United Methodist Church and Homebuilders Sunday School Class. Mom spent over 30 years teaching in the Children’s Department at the Church and later enjoyed teaching the children of many of her former pupils. She is survived by her son Travis and wife Melanie of Austin; son Jeff and wife Mary Dell of Oklahoma and their children Mallary and Jeremy Malwick (Millie, Wylie, Charlie); Ryan and Chelsea Dean; Maura and Chris Cross (Selah and Shepherd); son Andy and girlfriend Janelle, former wife Elicia and their son Avery of Amarillo; and her surviving sister, Dorothy Gaudin of Austin. Mom is now reunited with our Dad and with our Heavenly Father but she’ll always be we us in our hearts and our memories. Thank you Mom for everything, We’ll see you soon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be given to the Children’s Ministry at Polk Street United Methodist Church. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, August 20, 2021 at Polk Street United Methodist Church.
