September 29, 1927 - December 18, 2020
Benjamin Aaron Johnson was known to be a great man with few very words. He enjoyed the simple things in life. He enjoyed watching sports, specifically Thunder basketball, University of Oklahoma football, the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team, and enjoyed playing golf with his friends. What Ben loved the most was being able to share these moments with his grandkids. He loved spending as much time as he could with them, having weekly meals and showing them how to cook. Ben was born on September 29, 1927 in Alton, MO to Maude and Walker Calvin Johnson, the 4th of 6 sons born to the family. He grew up in Alton and after graduating high school at the age of 16, he attended 1 year of college before enlisting in the US Army. After completing his duty, Ben went back to finish college, graduating from Southwest Missouri State with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. After graduating, he went back home to Alton where he started dating the love of his life, Shirley Dorris. Shirley and Ben married on December 26, 1953 in Alton and shortly after moved to Tulsa, OK, where Ben started his career with Douglas Aircraft. From there, the family moved to Bartlesville, OK when Ben was offered a position with Phillips Petroleum as a Systems Analyst. He spent 33 years with the company before retiring. During their time in Bartlesville, they were blessed with their son, Calvin in 1958. After retiring, Ben and Shirley moved to Oklahoma City, OK to be closer to their family. They loved spending time with their grandkids and shared many fond memories together. They were members of Crossings Community Church in Oklahoma City. Ben is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Shirley, son, Calvin Johnson, 5 grandsons and 5 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and 5 brothers. There will be a private family service celebrating the life of Ben. Friends are encouraged to virtually attend the service on Wednesday, December 23, 2020 at 2 p.m. available through the Crawford Family Funeral Service website. The link to the webcast will be on Ben’s webpage, and will launch on Wednesday at 1:55 p.m.
